This tidbit was gleamed from a paparazzi video, who after "stalking" Milla for a while, listening to her talk about her daughter managed to ask was she was upto next in which she replied that she was shooting at the end of the year. After asking to which project she was referring, Milla replied "number 4". Considerding that she has never done 3 of anything other than Resident Evil, this confirmed that she was to appear in her husbands 4th Resident Evil movie.
The news follows on from the conformation by Paul W.S. Anderson that he is indeed penning a fourth movie tentatively titled Resident Evil: Afterlife. The news came with the information that Capcom will be involved with the process and that a release date of September 17, 2010 has been set for the film next year.
The news seems to imply that Anderson will be following on from Resident Evil: Extinction, so an army of Alices seems very likely. Other specualtions about the setting of the film have leant in the direction of Tokyo, how much this is true however, is currently uncertain.
Below are some sources and other stories regarding the news:

Only 14 Months Until Evil Takes Up Residence Again
Start your countdown: the fourth Resident Evil movie (complete with multiple Millas) will arrive in little over a year from now.
Shock Till You Drop has received confirmation that the next movie in the one-time trilogy will be released on September 17, 2010. Called Resident Evil: Afterlife, Paul WS Anderson's fourth movie will - as we revealed last year - feature an army of Milla Jovovich's Alices taking on the Umbrella Corporation. September 2010 seems too far away already.
Confirmed Exclusive: Resident Evil 4 Arriving in Late 2010 [Shock Till You Drop]
Milla Jovovich has confirmed that that she will start shooting on 'number 4' at the end of the year, and we all know what she's already made three of.

Just ignore the first minute or so of this video, unless you're particularly interested in Milla Jovovich's 16-month old daughter's opinions. What's of particular interest is her confirmation that she will start shooting on 'number 4' at the end of the year. A quick check on IMDB confirms what we all already knew, the only movie that Ms. Jovovich has ever been in that had three previous installments was... (drum roll) Resident Evil.
The third movie, Resident Evil: Extinction, defied the law of diminishing returns and actually made more money that its predecessors and after its release, the producers almost immediately started talking about Resident Evil 4. This comment from Ms. Jovovich suggests that we'll see Alice make a return as well.
Why we'd want to is a completely different question however.

Jovovich: Resident Evil 4 Shooting By End of '09
Source:HT July 2, 2009
Kudos to reader 'HT' for catching this! In a paparazzi video featuring Milla Jovovich out on the town, the actress says, "We're going to start shooting at the end of the year." When asked what she merely replies, "Number four!" implying the next chapter in the Resident Evil franchise. Sony would need to begin lensing on Resident Evil: Afterlife if they hope to make the September 17, 2010 release date we announced yesterday.

Confirmed Exclusive: Resident Evil 4 Arriving in Late 2010
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor July 2, 2009
Update: We have just received confirmation - the release date is true!
In spite of what any of the talent involved in Resident Evil: Extinction told us during the press tour (mostly, "this is the final chapter"), the film left the door wide - and we mean WIDE open - for a fourth installment.
Late last year, Paul W.S. Anderson revealed he was indeed writing another film. Capcom was getting involved. Everyone, as he said, was "excited." Well, we've just learned from a studio insider that Sony is looking to get Resident Evil: Afterlife into theaters by September 17, 2010. That's according to an internal memo circulating through the offices there.
Will Anderson direct? Unsure. Will Milla Jovovich be back? I think it would be safe to say yes considering the last entry ended on - SPOILER ALERT - Alice clones getting ready to seek revenge on the Umbrella Corporation which was holed up in Tokyo.

Hey i have little hope lol, seeing how in extraction most of the clone alices died in the doctor's test maybe the whole army will be whiped out and hust ALice survives.
But what will be the final boss? we already had a licker, nemisis, a tyrant, and now... maybe a hunter or more likely another tyrant.
Secondly, I wonder which name from the games will be tarnished next. We've already tarnished Ashford, Wesker...And the list goes on. I will admit the movie rendering of Jill Valentine was probably the closest to game out of all the movies.
I'm not trying to bash the movie series. I actually own them all and enjoy them for the most part, but there are just things that I think could have been done better, and personally, I don't think Alice should be the primary focus anymore.
And hey, maybe we'll get a TG-Type Tyrant in this one...One with electrical properties and the ability to change sexes!

And Anderson said that this movie would be closer to the games.
I have probably heard mostly that the Tokyo idea was on the cards, but have also read that there could be a mix of Antarctica as well, a dual setting along the lines of Code Veronica, so I have no idea where he is going with this.
If he did want to make it more like the games, his best bet would be to actually make this fourth movie Resident Evil 4 as it (the game) is so removed from the rest of the Resident Evil storyline anyway. Of course this waould just irritate hardcore Resident Evil fans more as the closest game to film conversion would be the game that they felt wandered so far from the Resident Evil path.
Oh and opting just to use characters out of context, a la the suggestion of Kevin Ryman would be really cheap, showing a lack of originality on Anderson's part and irritating the fans even more.
My only hope for this film is if they turn it on its head and make Alice/army of Alice's (for god's sake) the enemy. Have her mutate horribly and then kill her off.
A fact-based thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska,
where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained
disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a
federal cover-up. Milla plays a woman investigating the disappearances
in the town. ". So, when she sticks her hand up and says "4" she could have been talking about this.
Either way though, it doesn't get around the fact that this film is being made with the expected release for next year as was confirmed by Anderson himself.
