In anticipation of upcoming Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, I decided to replay Umbrella Chronicles. Halfway through the game an idea dawned on me regarding the light gun games and their future or lack thereof. Darkside Chronicles is billed as the latest in Capcom's Survival Gun games franchise. With Darkside Chronicles impeding release the following games have now been (or will be) covered.
Resident Evil 0 (UC)
Resident Evil 1 (UC)
Resident Evil 2 (DSC)
Resident Evil 3 (UC)
Resident Evil CV (DSC)
As well as:
Umbrella's Downfall chapter (UC)
Albert Wesker Subchapter (UC RE 0,1,2,3, Umbrella's Downfall)
Richard and Rebecca Subchapter (UC RE 1)
HUNK Subchapter (UC RE 2)
Ada Subchapter (UC RE 2)
Un-named South American Chapter (DSC)
Being a fan of the light gun games I began to think of the long-term aspects of such a franchise as I do with all new IP's. It hit me that (pending unreleased scenerio's for DSC) the following games have not be either announced or planned.
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil: Outbreak file 1 & 2
Resident Evil: Gaiden
Resident Evil: Survivor
Resident Evil: Gun Survivor
Resident Evil: Degeneration
From this list I began to narrow down the games that seem plausible for a DSC sequel. Resident Evil 4 is a possibility, judging that Capcom seems to love to milk that game for all it's worth. With the Success of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, it's likely Capcom would use Resident Evil 4. It's a different story for 5. As much as wii owners begged to get a port of Resident Evil 5, Capcom hasn't announced any plans for one. I highley doubt that Capcom would use Resident Evil 5 as a scenerio of a Light Gun Game. It is my opinion that Capcom has completely either forgotten about Outbreak or are simply just ignoring it. If however they ever plan to ever mention it again, a light gun game would be a perfect fit. A doubtful, but perfect fit none the less. Survivor in it's own sense was a first-person shooter, and seeing as it had little success State-side, the chances of ever seeing a ressurection of Survivor as well as Gun Survivor is slim...really slim. That leaves me with one more game. Gaiden, by all means has been disputed whether it is Canon or not. I personally agree it isn't. There are however people who say (or wish) it was. Canon or not, There probably isn't a single Resident Evil fan out there or here that would dispute a Barry resurface. The FPS quality as well as the enviorment would seem perfect for a light gun game. Finally we have Degeneration. Resident Degeneration is a movie of course...but it doesn't mean it wouldn't make a great scenerio for a Light gun game. Plus from JBoc's Iphone/Ipod Touch game review...I can say it can work for a light gun game.
My Verdict
With such a few selections of games and movies left, I find it hard that another Resident Evil Chronicles game is ever released save Darkside Chronicles. This is sad news as I believe that the Light gun games gave a new blood to Capcom's Storied Franchise. As with all great things they must come to an end. Sadely I feel that in this case....the end came to soon. As for the article itself, I personally think that there is absolutely no reason why they cannot have another sequel to the Chronicles series that focusses on Resident Evils 4 and 5. Essentially having the story of Las Plagas. Interspruced with Degeneration scenarios and incidents hinted at Resi 5, like Chris and Jill facing Wesker.
Additional story set around the forming of the BSAA and the like could make up the additional content too.
Future development could then be around all new content if the series was still financially successful. And considering time would have gone by, PSP Resident Evil may have come out or possible other Resident Evil projects be announced/out that could then be used for future material.
yea i gues they could do that but re4 and 5 are recent releases so we dont need a recap on them just yet, hmm if they did do it i wonder who they would give leon as a partner because ashley doesnt seem to be the type of person to blast away ganados
Since Wii owners cannot play Resi 5 on their console currently either, then some form of Resi 5 would be good for them. It would be over a year since the release of Resi 5 and I see the Chronicles games as being aimed at newcomers as well as the hardcore fanbase, so I'm sure it would all be a viable option for Capcom.
Oh and a good point about the whole partner thing, I reckon they would cop out and go with Ada, leaving Ashley to be your goal most of the time, kind of how Sherry seems to be in the trailers for Darkside.
Umbrella Chronicles taught us one thing: With the lack of effort you can still sell a million copies of a RE styled rail shooter. Now it seems they are attempting to put some form of effort into Darkside Chronicles to hype the game up as a darker and more detailed follow up. Or at the very least they are making it seem as though that is the case. Trying to maintain a few previous voice actors instead of replacing everyone is one start. Re-creating the environments and level design is another. I can already tell from the trailers that Darkside Chronicles is following RE2 more closely than Umbrella Chronicles followed RE3. It doesn't look as though the levels were ripped straight out of the outbreak games as you could plainly see in RE3's scenario. They seem to be following the stories a little more closely. Rather than cut out main players like Barry or Nicholai, and save them as character mentioned in the files we're getting reports and some confirmation that Sherry, Ada, Marvin, Kendo, Irons the Ashfords, etc. will all be involved through the course of the games. That leaves you to wonder if their summaries will cover most of the highlights of the game or not. We certainly missed out on Edward and Brad's deaths or Barry in general.
If DSC sells well enough Capcom will want to continue their success on the wii, and they certainly are trying to build a fanbase. We have REmake, RE Zero and RE4 on the system.
My hopes however are not for another rail shooter even though I suspect that Capcom would love to make a RE4/RE5 title "The plagas chronicles"?
I would like to see them attempt a brand new RE game on the wii that plays as a survival horror title. I hope that if Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is good and becomes a successful horror game on the wii then they can inspire companies to try and make actual horror games that are not dependant on being played in the 1st person with a gun.
