The Evolution of Silent Hill

An in-depth article written and created by jeeves86

Original Writer: jeeves86

The Evolution of Silent Hill

When Silent Hill was first released in 1999 for the original Sony Playstation console, many critics and gamers alike were quick to label the game as a Resident Evil copy. The survival horror genre was quite fresh, but even in 1999 it was clear that the two games were quite different.

In this article I’m going to examine several elements of each of the games and examine how they have changed throughout the series.

Storyline

One of the key items that sets Silent Hill apart from any other game that you’ve ever played is the story. Silent Hill often tasks players with looking at the dark side of humanity, examining issues such as cultism, guilt, murder, repression and mental illness.

This is just a short run-down of the story that the Silent Hill franchise has taken over the years. A more-detailed description of the plots of all of the games would run much longer. I have tried not to reveal the endings of the games, but I must warn that there are major elements of the plots revealed in the following section.

Silent Hill 1, told he story of Harry Mason, looking for his daughter Cheryl. The two of them have come to Silent Hill for vacation—Silent Hill being a bit of a tourist destination. However, when the player arrives, they are not greeted to the amusement park, hotel and beautiful Toluca Lake, but instead to immense fog, broken streets and a town that’s pretty much devoid of people. Demons and monsters, on the other hand are plentiful. The whole town is also slowly being overtaken by an Otherworld—a hellish nightmare brought to life by a cult intent on resurrecting a God.

Throughout this journey Harry meets up with police officer Cybil Bennet, a woman named Dahlia Gillespie, Dr. Michael Kaufmann, and a terrified nurse by the name of Lisa Garland. He hears of the young girl, Allessa Gillespie and her story. Harry learns of how his daughter ties into these events.

As in all of the games, each of these characters add something unique to the story—they tell of the town itself, its rampant drug problem, and in essence how Harry, and all of these characters found their way here.

In essence, Dahlia sacrificed her daughter to the fires seven years ago, splitting Alesa’s soul into two. The God that this cult is trying to resurrect, Samael, could not be born at this time because Alessa was split in two, so a spell was cast by Dahlia that would ultimately draw the other half of theAlessa’s soul back to Alessa, so Samael could be born into the world again. The other half of Alessa was—you guessed it, Cheryl.

What happens in between, you’ll have to play the game to find out.

This is pretty much main storyline of Silent Hill (as it should be, it’s the first game). It is retold again in the film adaptation (with several liberties included) and continued on in Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 5, and Silent Hill Homecoming. It is also “re-imagined” in the latest release in the series, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

The second game, released in 2001 for the Playstation 2, follows James Sunderland, who has come to Silent Hill to look for his wife, Mary. In a letter, Mary requests James to come to Silent Hill, to their ‘special place’ at the Lakeview Hotel. Ordinarily, no big deal—except for one thing. Mary died 3 years ago from an untold disease.

As James explores Silent Hill, he encounters others searching the town as well—Angela, whom he meets at the beginning of the game, is longingly looking for her mother. Eddie appears in the town as well, suspiciously near corpses, denying anything to do with their deaths. In addition to these two characters, James meets Maria, a woman who “could have been be Mary’s twin,” as James states. Laura, a young girl, also is present in Silent Hill, who seems to have no knowledge of the dangers of the town—not even the monsters.

Each of these characters have their own influence on the game, each of them revealing something about the town and the impact that it has on James. This is different to the previous game in that it isn’t told why the town is the way it is. The only real constant from Silent Hill 1 to Silent Hill 2 is the town itself.

Silent Hill 2 also introduced one of the most identifiable enemies of the franchise—Pyramid Head. While often touted to be a psychological representation of James’ repressed guilt over the incidents of Mary’s death, Pyramid Head also appears in the Silent Hill film adaptation, and Silent Hill 5: Homecoming (presumably—not as James). The game’s dark messages are brought out through Pyramid Head’s actions, as he’s shown repeatedly defiling various enemies in the game.

Silent Hill 2 stands on its own—it is not directly tied in to any of the other games. Its endings are not officially made clear—(but you could say it’s fairly obvious). Many fans of the series cite Silent Hill 2 as their favourite for its dark plot and the implicit meanings of the enemies throughout the game.

The third instalment in the Silent Hill series is a direct sequel back to the first game. It is set approximately 17 years after the events of the first game, and follows Heather, who is drawn to Silent Hill’s reality after an experience at the mall. In short, she ultimately discovers that she is a part of the plans of the town’s cult, and becomes entrapped within the cult itself.

At the beginning of Silent Hill 3, Heather evades private investigator Douglas Cartland, who tells her that he has information on her past. She escapes him into the shopping mall, which is, in traditional Silent Hill style, full of monsters. Heather meets Claudia, the priestess of Silent Hills’s cult--who speaks of her strangely. Heather is knocked unconscious and when she awakens, finds herself in—Silent Hill style as well—in the Otherworld.

When Heather finally makes it home, after having run into Douglas and a chance meeting with Vincent, who is affiliated with Claudia, she finds that her father has been killed by a monster. Although the game never shows his face, it is assumed that Heather’s father is Harry, from the first game, as judged by his clothes. Heather resolves to go to Silent Hill to kill Claudia. Douglas meets her in her apartment and drives her to Silent Hill. En route, Heather reads a note left by her father before his death, which explains the events of Silent Hill, revealing that the baby girl that was left to him at the end of the game was her, and that Claudia is seeking Heather to birth the cult’s god, since Heather is a reincarnation of Alessa.

Silent Hill 4 is set in the town of South Ashfield and focused on the character of Henry Townshend. Henry awakes one day to find himself trapped inside of his apartment. Silent Hill 4 is also unrelated to the original storyline of Silent Hill, as it was unintended to be a Silent Hill game. It follows the story of Henry’s conflict with an undead serial killer.
Henry’s first destination is an abandoned subway station where he finds a woman named Cynthia Velazquez, who is convinced that she is in a dream. She is killed. On a radio that Henry has picked up, he hears confirmation that she is dead—the same thing seems to happen to the other people that Henry finds on his trip out from his apartment—Jasper Gein, Richard Braintree and Andrew DeSalvo. All of these murders are uncannily similar to the seemingly deceased Walter Sullivan’s killings.

Scraps of the diary of Henry’s apartment’s former occupant, explains that Walter was an orphan who had been led to believe that his mother was the apartment. It is also revealed that Walter was attempting to carry out some sort of ritual—and that Henry was a part of that ritual.

The first game for the Playstation Portable, Silent Hill Origins is a prequel to the original Silent Hill. This game follows Travis Grady—a trucker who suffers from haunting nightmares. Out on a job near Silent Hill, he sees a figure walk out in front of his truck and collapse. In an attempt to go after the girl, he finds a burning house. Travis pulls a burned body from the fiery house and collapses outside. When he wakes up, he is in the same twisted town of Silent Hill.

Wondering of the fate of the child, Travis heads to Alchemillia Hospital, a recurring location in the series. Here he finds Dr. Kaufmann, from the first game. He denies that there was any patient that fits the description of the child. Yet in another room, Travis finds the little girl looking back at him through a mirror, beckoning him to come through the mirror, which, like a window, sees into the Otherworld. In touching the mirror, Travis is taken there.
Throughout the game, Travis finds strange, triangular pieces that resemble the Flauros--the tool that Harry used in the first game. Each time he finds a piece, he is treated to flashbacks that suggest his mother attempted to kill both him and herself when Travis was young, after becoming angry with his father. Along the way Travis meets Dahlia Gillespie, who informs him that it was her house and her child that were consumed in the fire. The girl continues to appear in mirrors throughout the town, but Travis is unable to get answers from her. Travis finds his way to the cult’s ritual grounds, where he sees various cult members surrounding the body of the burned child he rescued previously.

The final instalment of the series (as of writing), Silent Hill Homecoming, released for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, tells the story of Alex Shepherd. Alex is returning home to look for his younger brother, Joshua.

Alex is a discharged solider of the US army after being injured and spending some time in a military hospital. Upon returning home, he discovers that many people have gone missing in his home of Shepherd’s Glen (named after a distant ancestor who helped to found the town). His mother is in a near catatonic state, and his father has gone to find his missing brother. Alex promises his mother to find Josh.

Along the way, Alex runs into childhood friend Elle Holloway, the delusional Mayor Bartlett. Dr. Fitch and Judge Holloway (Elle’s mother)—all staples of the town, who also have distant ancestors that go back to the town’s inception. Along the way, Alex learns that his father was part of the town’s dark secrets and attempts to get answers from back home. When he arrives, several members of Silent Hill’s cultists (known as The Order) have kidnapped his mother and taken her, with the others, back to Silent Hill. In essence, it’s up to Josh to save his mother, and find his missing father and brother.
What happens, as any true Silent Hill fan can tell you, is often far different from what Alex set out to do.

Each game in the series often has multiple endings. Which one the player receives all depends on certain prerequisites that have been met during the game. For example, if you wandered around with low health and collected certain items, examined Angela’s knife enough times, you were bound to get the bad ending (figuratively speaking).

Graphics and Visuals

Obviously as time passes, the power of the machines running Silent Hill games grows. The original Silent Hill used the Playstation 1’s limitations to its advantage. Instead of wasting resources with a large draw rate, the creators kept the visible area of the game often to just a few feet around the player. With the inclusion of fog, and darkness, the player was limited in what they could see and often had to rely only on what they could hear.

This is something that has remained the same throughout the series, even as the machines running the games advanced. In keeping with the psychological horror aspect, each game was shrouded in darkness or fog. That isn’t to say that the series hasn’t progressed from its jagged edges and grainy visuals. Each game has remained and remains fairly consistent with other games of that console generation, not overly above or below that grade. Cutscenes however in each game are rendered beautifully, even if with a certain grit that fans are used to, that adds to the effect of the game as a whole.
Silent Hill is a dark series, and as stated at the beginning of each game, it contains depictions of violence and gore. Whether it’s a corpse hanging off of a fence, blood smeared all over Robbie the Rabbit, or Pyramid Head defiling a Bubblehead nurse—Silent Hill is definitely a mature game, not for the weak-hearted.

Audio

Composer Akira Yamaoka has been a staple of the Silent Hill series since its inception. He has composed dark and emotional music for every game in the series. His work ranges from post-industrial music to trip-hop and alternative rock music. In addition to player only being able to see a few feet around them, Yamaoka’s music has intensified the psychological horror aspect of the game. In certain areas of the game, you must hear the enemies around you in order to actually fight them. In the Otherworld, music volumes are heightened so that it is difficult to hear these enemies around you through your radio (you pick one up every time). Hearing the radio go off when you’re low on health is often just the right thing to get a player’s heart pumping.

Each soundtrack has been made available for separate purchase, or sometimes included with the game itself. The game’s soundtracks are often haunting within themselves.

Gameplay

In each of the games, the player assumes control of the protagonist in a third-person perspective. Except in Silent Hill 4, where much of the game is viewed through a first-person perspective (as in Henry’s Apartment). In Silent Hill 5, the camera takes an over-the-shoulder view instead of using mostly fixed-cameras as in previous entries. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is set to also be an over-the-shoulder view game.
Gameplay in each of the games is fairly consistent—players will explore various areas of the town in both the real world and the Otherworld, fighting enemies and solving puzzles along the way. One can argue that the puzzles of previous games are much more complex and time consuming of more current games in the series. This can be explained by the shifting emphasis on combat (with the exception being Shattered Memories, which is set to be primarily a puzzle-adventure game).

While combat has always been an element in Silent Hill games, the latest entries in the series have more advanced combat systems, involving targeting systems and positional damage. While firearms are present in the series, melee combat is a preferred favourite. Many of the enemies in previous Silent Hill games can be run past, which is often preferred. However in Origins and Homecoming, it is often easier just to defeat the enemies and continue from there.

The difficulty level of enemies has also seen an increase—which could also be explained by the combat/puzzle emphasis shift. It should also be noted that in previous games, there was often a lack of enemies in the town. The number of enemies encountered in a game appear to have increased over the years, in balance with the combat/puzzle emphasis shift.

This has remained a constant in the series, used in later entries to intensify the psychological thriller aspect of the games. While in Homecoming and Origins, you may be able to see further around you, developers utilized a “Noise Grain” effect (this has been used since Silent Hill 2). This can be compared to grain on film, which gives the game a constant feeling of movement, or noise. Objects further away might appear as if they are moving—even if they are stationary. This inhibits the player’s sight, and really makes reliable visibility only a few feet around the character.
In most of the games, the Heads Up Display (HUD) was non-existent. Only in the latest game, Homecoming, were players treated to this particular mechanic. When Alex would be injured, his health would flash onscreen. This gave you a hint as to when to use an available Health Drink or other health item.

Lasting Appeal

It’s not uncommon to play through a Silent Hill game and not be able to grasp all that the game has to offer. With multiple endings available for the games, a second or third playthrough was often necessary just for closure.

The game that I most frequently like to refer to in illustrating this point is Silent Hill 2, however there are many other instances in the series where this also holds true. As I’m sure many of you know, many of the enemies in Silent Hill 2 have a distinct feminine appearance to them. It’s no coincidence that the enemies present throughout Silent Hill 2 have a deeper meaning to them. Once you discover what it is, a whole new chapter of the story is opened up to you, giving the game a much more lasting appeal.

A personal inference that I like to make is also with Homecoming. It took me a while to figure it out, but many of these enemies also have a feminine appearance to them. In looking at the deeper meaning, it can be said that they can be assumed to be weak and vulnerable, much like Alex’s brother Josh. These enemies are not defenceless though, as they can very easily hurt you (and they do—a lot). Maybe this is also what Alex believes to be of Josh? The enemies that lurk under the surface of the water in the Shepherd’s basement reflect on the state of the Shepherd home, even in good times. What appears to be serene on the top is not always so, upon closer inspection.

There is still much to be said about the Silent Hill universe. Even after 10 years as the franchise has changed hands, from Team Silent, to Climax games to Double Helix, each game in the series has a dark, lasting appeal on gamers, enough to keep them coming back for more. Through dark storylines, jarring visuals and haunting audio, the series promises to hold that lasting effect well into the future.

Spawning six sequels and with one on the way, as well as a series of comics, novels and a film adaptation of the first game, Silent Hill has become known to gamers as a deep, psychological probe into the deep recesses of their minds.

written by (published quickly for intern reasons)

Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles: review incoming

It has been an extremely long time since i've posted on this wonderful site but I'm finally back! And what a week it has been, it should have been coined "The Week of the Undead" seeing as how Left 4 Dead 2, Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, AND most recently: RESIDENT EVIL 2 (finally!) have all been released within the span of a week. So apart from studying for exams I have been shooting down hordes of zombies across all three platforms, happy times.

But as the title of this short article suggests, yes, I will be composing a Darkside Chronicles review that should be up sometime this weekend, as soon as I clear it. But here are my current impressions:

The best on rails experience I , personally, have ever had. If only this was in the traditional gameplay style of Resident Evil norm then this would rank pretty high with the best of the series. I'm really appreciating how the story line is beautifully complimented by the awesome flash back scenarios. As opposed to Umbrella Chronicles, this doesn't feel like just a collection of shooting gallery levels, it actually feels like an authentic Resident Evil experience.

I just wrapped up the Resident Evil 2 scenario and the second Operation Javier mission, and am currently delving into the surface of the Code Veronica flashback. And I'm having an extremely good time doing it. There is one factor that I am really loving (but most people seem to despise) : the camera. It really does a very good job of immersing you into this interactive horror film. But enough of me blabbing on about this, I'm going to continue playing so I can deliver you guys my full detailed review.

RE 5: Alternative Edition New Enemy

Capcom has once again updated their official Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition.
This time, some new pics about a new enemy that will appear in the Spencer State Chapter following both Chris and Jill.

To some RE fans and veterans, the character might look somewhat familiar, as it shares some resemblance to the Resident Evil Remake enemy Lisa Trevor, notice both the hunchback, skin decoloration, feetcuffs and chains.

Perhaps this new enemy might be the enigmatic and misterious character, George Trevor protecting the new Spencer State?

Share your thoughts about who the new enemy is!

Official Site:
http://www.capcom.co.jp/bio5/ae/index.html

It may be the right time to mention this...

Let's get straight to the point:

I've secretly been working on a new website the past 2 months. It goes back to where reHorror came from but includes the community aspect aswell. While reH has become a messy community we want to bring back professionality and organized content. Even with all the similarities to the old reH, the content will be completely different. More on that later though.

reHorror will co-exist with that other site and continue to serve as a community.

I'd love to tell you more already, but i enjoy to surprise people. Right now, i am only using this blog post to aquire 1 or 2 editors/writers who .. (i shed some light now) enjoy to play the darker games, namely survival horror games and care to write about them as if its about their babies' birth.

This site (name even starts and ends with the same letter as reHorror!) is paying $10 per month to each Editor (increasable). Jobs include generation of content and news updates. I dont want to spoil too much, so please PM me incase you are interested in participating in this project.

More infos at a later time, i don't want to be too euphoric yet, but belive we have quite a few cool ideas and will present Horror in an appropiate and professional way.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles Tofu and bonus costumes footage

A recent post in Milla Jovovich's Twitter has revealed further information about how the shooting of the film is unfolding, and in one of these posts she wrote:

"They were of the big action sequence with Alice and Claire fighting THE EXECUTIONER who in reality is an 8 ft. tall heavy weight boxer! He has a HUGE axe and we're in a prison shower, so every time he swings the axe, showers explode! So thru the whole scene its literally raining! so beautiful!"

Looks like Paul Anderson has taken RE 5 as an influence for the upcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife movie.

Link:
http://shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=12661

Milla Jovovich's Twitter:
http://twitter.com/MillaJovovich

Resident Evil 5: About Jill Valentine

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Including a small break i am back to bring you the rest of the stories out of an official Capcom Resident Evil 5 promotional journal called "Resident Evil 5 Declassified", here's Jill for your reading pleasure:

Jill Valentine started her life as a soldier with the U.S. Army's Delta Force training program , where she excelled in bomb disposal. After completing the program she entered S.T.A.R.S. as both a lock specialist and a highly skilled fighter.

Jill was part of the Alpha Team involved in the Mansion Incident at the Arkley Research Facility, where the Alpha Team captain, Albert Wesker, betrayed her and her fellow teammates. During the incident, Jill and Chris Redfield, another member of Alpha Team, operated independently, both suffering attacks from Albert Wesker's biological organic weapons. However, it took both Jill and Chris working togheter to fully discover the horrible truth behind both the factory and Umbrella Corporation's T-Virus.

Following Jill's return from the mansion, she and Chris attempted to inform the authorities of Umbrella's activities. They where met with no movement towards any official investigation into the company. As a result, Jill and Chris took it upon themselves to investigate Umbrella independently. They concentrated their efforts on Umbrella's main base of operations in Europe. However, as a S.T.A.R.S. member entrusted with protecting Raccoon City, Jill chose to remain in the city for the time being and investigate the Umbrella research facility there before moving out to rendezvous with Chris in Europe.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

This decision led to her involvement in the Raccoon City incident.

During her investigation, she found that rodents had been infected with the T-Virus from the Arkley Research Facility and were quickly spreading the virus into the city. Umbrella sent the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.) to handle the situation, while also dispatching the bioweapon Nemesis T-Type to eliminate the threat of any remaining S.T.A.R.S. members, such as Jill Valentine. As Jill attempted to escape from Raccoon City, she encountered the Nemesis T-Type and became infected with the T-Virus. It was only through the assistance of U.B.C.S. member Carlos Oliveira that she was able to obtain a cure for the virus and successfully escape from Raccoon City.

Jill's next major involvement with the Umbrella Corporation came in 2003, after Operation: T-A.L.O.S. It was at this time that Jill and Chris became two of the original eleven founding members of Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (B.S.A.A.), an organization formed to fight against bioweapons and bioterrorism around the world.

As Jill and Chris investigated and stopped numerous bioweapon related incidents across the globe, they still believed that the now fallen Umbrella Corporation might have had some involvement in the world of biological organic weapons. To determine if their hunch had any merit, Jill and Chris went to speak with Umbrella's founder, Ozwell E. Spencer. However, instead of meeting Spencer, they encountered their former Captain, Wesker, and conflict arose.

As Wesker was about to end Chris's life, Jill concluded that the only way to save her partner was to sacrifice herself. She lunged forward and threw both herself and Wesker out of a window and over the side of a cliff. The B.S.A.A. launched a full-scale search operation, but neither Jill's body nor any of her personal effects were ever recovered.

On November 23, 2006, Jill Valentine was officially declared dead, and her name was added to the list of B.S.A.A. members who have died in the line of duty.

I meant to report this a few days ago, but it got lost in the vast absense of the lack of Resident Evil news. A bit of a backwards statement, yes, but give me a break i'm swamped with all this vacuum of everything Resi.

Anyway, the folks over at thespeedgamers.com are running a two day Resident Evil marathon over this years Halloween. Starting at 6pm CST on Friday 30th October, the team will play through all the main staple Resident Evil games (and the ..ahem.. classic Resident Evil: Gaiden), all the way through to Sunday night.

They will be playing to raise money for the charity; The Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, accepting donations from the public, for which prizes will be given out. There will be a live feed on their site to cover all the action of the playthroughs as well as a chatroom so you can interact directly throughout proceedings. In fact a bonus pumpkin cam will also be available so that you can still capture that door to door trick or treating feel of the night.

You can view a trailer for proceedings by <a href="http://www.thespeedgamers.com/thespeedgamers-resident-evil-trailer" title="Marathon trailer @ http://www.thespeedgamers.com/thespeedgamers-resident-evil-trailer">clicking here.

For those of you familiar with the staff at the site, the following is a list of who is playing what and who is also commentating on which respective title:

Game and player list:

Resident Evil 0 (GC) – Tyler
Resident Evil 1 (GC)– Tyler
Resident Evil Gaiden (GB)– Phil
Resident Evil 2 (GC) – Gwellin
Resident Evil 3 – Kilgard
Resident Evil Code Veronica – Phil
Resident Evil 4 (GC) – Tim
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360)– Baltes

Commentator Schedule:

Friday 6pm-12am – Britt
Saturday 12am-6am – Rust
Saturday 6am-9am – Baltes
Saturday 9am-12pm – Gwellin
Saturday 12pm-6pm – Tyler
Saturday 6pm-12am – Chase
Sunday 12am-6am – Rust
Sunday 6am-9am – Ferenc
Sunday 9am-6pm – Room Collaboration (Britt, Chase, Phil, Tyler, Rob, Paul, etc.).

You can join in with the speed gamers Resident Evil Halloween by clicking here.

[Source: thespeedgamers.com]

Resident Evil: Afterlife Updates, Including Cast Announcements And Initial Synopsis

Zombies camped out at UTSC this weekend, when the cast and crew of the Resident Evil blockbuster franchise occupied the Meeting Place, an open space in the Science Building. The movies are centered on ridding the world of a zombie takeover, with Milla Jovovich starring as the ass-kicking Alice. The campus also hosted co-stars Wentworth Miller and Boris Kodjoe.

The Meeting Place will serve as a mess hall for the fourth installment, Resident Evil: Aftermath. UTSC won out when location manager Jonathan Matthews pointed out that the architecture could be manipulated with ease. “We needed to find a prison interior to suit the needs of the script,” said lMatthews. “UTSC has brutalist architecture. I looked at it with the designer and we saw a lot of possibilities to retrofit it […] to make it just like what we need for the scene.”

Set installation began Wednesday. No classes were rescheduled or moved for the construction.

An exclusive tour of the set revealed the impressive transformation the meeting place received. Usually a large, empty area with a few lounge chairs and a tiny Tim Horton’s on the periphery, the space was totally transformed. Blacked-out windows and doors meant no natural light. The ceiling lighting was covered with a sheeting to create a flickering flame-like effect to complement the torches used. False walls marked several jail cells all around. In the centre was a mess-hall seating area.

“The height [offered us] the ability to light the set from above without getting in the way,” said Matthews. “[It provided] a large-scale space with clean lines and layers for walkways in a jail […] with perfect dimensions for cells.”

While many students were excited to hear about the celebrities, Matthews said that students “have been curious but also cooperative.”

This isn’t the first time UTSC has been used for filming. It was also used for a scene in Cheaters, released in 2000. Resident Evil filming took place on Saturday after days of setting up the scene. Additional shooting for Resident Evil will take place downtown next week (Matthews declined to disclose the location, but trailers have been spotted on George Street, near Jarvis and College). Resident Evil: Aftermath is scheduled for release in 2010.

Matthews also did not disclose the Meeting Place rental fee. He has been a location manager for 17 years and has previously worked with Jack Martin, the UTSC director of retail and conference services. “There is a process to go through and we respect that,” said Matthews.

[Sources: varsity.ca, shocktillyoudrop.com, dreadcentral.com Pictures: scifiscoop.com]

Resident Evil Release Dates and Prices - Darkside Chronicles and Archives: RE0

With the main focus of Resident Evil news being all things Resident Evil 5 Alternate Edition, I thought I would focus instead on those other Resident Evil games that are due to come out in the next couple of months. This was primarily sparked by a recent update on Amazon.com's page relating to the release date for Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero for the U.S.

Here is the list of current release dates, some are still sketchy for Resident Evil Archives, but it does indeed seem that it will be released around the start of December. The release dates for Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles are indeed the officially announced by Capcom dates.

Resident evil release dates via gamestop.com

Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero
12/01/2009 ships at date (1st of December) - Preorder at $29.99
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=74659

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
11/17/2009 ships at date (17th of November) - Preorder at $49.99 (includes bonus zombie t-shirt)
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=230614

Resident evil release dates via amazon.com

Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero
12/08/2009 ships at date (8th of December) This was just recently updated - Preorder at $29.99
http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-Archives-0-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B00269DXR0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255014597&sr=8-2

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
11/17/2009 ships at date (17th of November) - Preorder at $46.99
http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-Darkside-Chronicles-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B0020H46D8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255014704&sr=8-3

Resident evil release dates via amazon.co.uk (For European Territories)

Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero
No date yet supplied - Preorder at £16.99
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Resident-Evil-Archives-Zero-Wii/dp/B002PHMYIW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255014832&sr=8-2

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
27/11/09 release date (27th of November) - Preorder at £27.96 (standalone) or £39.99 (Bundle)

(Standalone) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Resident-Evil-Darkside-Chronicles-Wii/dp/B002MZZXBW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255015010&sr=8-1
(Bundle) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Resident-Evil-Darkside-Chronicles-Bundle/dp/B002NU5AAU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1255015238&sr=8-2

The links provided with these will take you directly to their respective pages where you can preorder if you wish.

[Sources: gamestop.com, amazon.com, amazon.co.uk]

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles TGS Interview At G4tv.com

I've been a bit sparse with posts of recent, especially on the news front and as such I thought I'd try and find some more recent news and the like to post up.

Recently G4tv released a new TGS video interview on their site with Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles Producers Kentaro Noguchi + Masachika Kawata, I was unsure if this had been mentioned on the site so decided to write this post anyway.

Some of this information you no doubt already know but for others who may have missed out on some of rehorror's previous posts, the two producers discuss Darkside Chronicles and its improvements over the previously released Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. New tidbits that may not have been mentioned before include the idea that the targetting reticule system has been improved on, ith the inclusion of the REsident Evil 4 and 5 laser targetting system, you can see (if you haven't already viewed it yet) the video here.

[Sources: meristation.com + G4tv.com]

Resident Evil 5: About Albert Wesker

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Here's another entry in our series of stories out of an official Capcom RE5 promotional journal called "Resident Evil 5 Declassified".

Albert Wesker has never been what he seems. As leader of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team, he was secretly acting under the command of Umbrella. He betrayed Umbrella when it suited his purposes and worked against them. Even as a human being, Wesker is more than he appears. He injected himself with an experimental virus, allowing him to escape his apparent death at the end of the Mansion incident.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

This virus altered his biology, turning his body just as inhuman as his cold and calculating mind. Enhanced speed, strength, and durability are the most basic of his newfound abilities, making him a hard target.

Wesker has shown a profound lack of concern for other human beings in the years since the Mansion incident. He has taken part in brief alliances with various people and companies, only to desert or kill them when that alliance has served its purpose. It is a pattern that has repeated itself time and time again.

Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine were the last B.S.A.A. operatives to encounter Albert Wesker, an encounter that left Jill Valentine and Wesker presumably dead. Considering Wesker's past actions and enhanced biology, it is safe to assume that he may have survived the fall.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

To describe wesker and Redfield's relationship as "tainted by bad blood" would be understating its severity. The betrayal in Raccoon City was only the beginning of their antagonistic relationship. The combination of casualities in the S.T.A.R.S. team and Wesker's actively attempting to sabotage their mission broke whatever bond they may have had forever.

Their animosity deepened when Claire Redfield, Chris's younger sister, was kidnapped and held at Rockfort Island in another encounter that led to Chris and Wesker confronting each other. After their last encounter resulted in the death of Redfield's partner, any further encounter between the two is almost certain to result in the death of one, or both, of the two men.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Here's another entry in our series of stories out of an official Capcom Resident Evil 5 promotional journal called Resident Evil: Declassified.

Umbrella has been focused on biological organic weapons research for decades with its founder, Ozwell Spencer, leading the company to discovery the Progenitor virus.

Exploration of and research into the Progenitor virus continued for over thirty years, resulting in a number of variant strains of differing levels of success. Over time, Umbrella became a major player in the pharmaceutical field, even going so far as to become a member of the executive board of the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium.

Umbrella's Arklay Research Facility, located just outside of Raccoon City, suffered a catastrophic failure. Specimens from the lab began to leak, resulting in cannibalistic murders and maulings of the local populace. Raccoon City's S.T.A.R.S. team was sent in to investigate, which soon resulted in the reveal of Umbrella's secretive and illegal research.

The outbreak soon reached Raccoon City, infecting much of the populace and sending the rest into hiding. Umbrella operatives attempted to gather up the research from the Arklay Facility and subsequent infection of Raccoon City, rather than assisting with a cure or evacuation. This would prove to be a mistake. Though the Arklay Facility outbreak could have been covered up with greased palms and hush money, the infection of an entire city was something more than they could easiely handle.

The spread of the outbreak resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Rather than risk a nationwide epidemic, the United States government chose to sterilize the area. The bankruptcy of Umbrella followed years later.

Resident Evil 5: About S.T.A.R.S.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Here's another entry in our series of stories out of an official Capcom promotional journal called "Resident Evil 5 Declassified":

S.T.A.R.S., Special Tactics and Rescue Service, is an expert branch of law enforcement that is equipped to handle strange situations or hostage rescues. Ten years ago, S.T.A.R.S. Bravo was deployed to investigate a series of heinous murders and possible cannibalism in and around Raccoon City. The team was almost completely wiped out, forcing S.T.A.R.S. Alpha to move into the area in a search and rescue mission located in a hostile zone.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Alpha team was attacked once they reached the zone of operations, forcing them to fall back to a nearby mansion. Unbeknownst to them, this mansion was the cover for an Umbrella compound known as the Arklay Research Facility. Inside the mansion, Alpha team found horrors that the world had never seen before.

Alpha team was forced to fight and destroy many of the facility's research specimens in order to make it out alive. It is a testament to their training, intelligence, and combat prowess that so many members of S.T.A.R.S. managed to survive.

Uploaded by DaMa to rehorror.gameriot.com

Only Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Brad Vickers, and Rebecca Chambers of Bravo team survived the mission. Albert Wesker, leader of Alpha team, revealed himself as a double agent under the employ of Umbrella. He betrayed his team, orchestrating the plans for their demise, and supposedly met his own end in the mansion. S.T.A.R.S.' operation in Raccoon City was the first of a series of increasingly serious B.O.W. outbreaks over the next few years. The virus outbreak in the mansion was not contained, only delayed, and soon spread to Raccoon City. The complete destruction and sterilization of the city soon followed.
